SUMMARY:The Ma & Pa Comes to Harford – Guest Speaker Walter Holloway
DESCRIPTION:February 21\, 2026 | 2:00 PM\nThe Historical Society of Harford County\n143 N Main Street\nBel Air\, MD 21014 \nThe Ma & Pa Railroad stretched between Baltimore at North Avenue & Howard Streets\, on to Towson\, and through Long Green Valley into Harford County. It ended at Market Street in York\, Pennsylvania. Even by the day’s standards\, it passed through some of the East Coast’s most wooded\, curvaceous\, and beautiful scenery. \nThe Ma & Pa Railroad was an important part of life in Harford County\, especially for the towns between Baltimore and York. The early morning run from Harford County to Baltimore City carried so much milk that locals called it “The Milky Way.” For the owners of the County’s many canneries\, quarries\, and mines\, the railroad was an essential part of their livelihood. The trains chugged through 23 miles in Harford County at an average speed of only 15–20 miles per hour because of the route’s many grade changes and curves. At the turn of the twentieth century\, the railroad trip from Baltimore City to Sharon (north of Forest Hill) took about 1 ¾ hours. \nIn addition to mail and a wide range of Harford County products\, the Ma & Pa also carried people—travelers\, shoppers\, theatergoers\, and relatives. They welcomed the screeching whistles and billowing steam clouds of the Ma & Pa Railroad as a way to see what lay beyond their hometowns. Like other railroads of the time\, the Ma & Pa began a slow decline as buses\, trucks\, and Model Ts carried people and products between Baltimore and Bel Air on Rt. 1. \nJoin Ma & Pa expert Walt Holloway as he shares his photographs and stories of the heyday of the Ma & Pa. Registration is available at www.harfordhistory.org. The fee is $15. \n\nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Baltimore: Forensic Flaws
DESCRIPTION:March 18\, 2026 | 6:00 PM | 8:30 PMGuilford Hall Brewery1611 Guilford AvenueBaltimore\, MD 21202\nProfs and Pints Baltimore presents: “Forensic Flaws\,” a critical look at how criminal investigations can go wrong\, with Dr. Jeff Kukucka\, professor of psychology at Towson University and consultant to crime labs\, law offices\, and government agencies. \n[Doors open at 5. The talk starts at 6:30. The room is open seating.] \nAlthough forensic science often plays a crucial role in solving crimes\, it isn’t nearly as foolproof as television shows make it seem. In fact\, mistakes by forensic scientists have contributed to over 1\,000 wrongful convictions in the United States\, with the result often being that innocent people get sent to prison while the real perpetrators remain free to victimize others. \nWhy do these mistakes happen? The simple answer is that forensic scientists are humans prone to the same flaws in their thinking as the rest of us. \nGain an in-depth understanding of how this happens with Professor Jeff Kukucka\, a psychologist whose work sheds light on the human element of forensic science and seeks to optimize how crime labs function and minimize the risk of costly mistakes\, including wrongful convictions. \n \n Get Tickets!
